Fraud Detection

Detecting Odometer Fraud on BC Used Cars

Odometer rollback is illegal in Canada, but it still happens — and it can artificially inflate the value of a used vehicle by thousands of dollars. Knowing the signs and the verification tools available in BC helps buyers avoid paying for kilometres that never happened. TrustAuto verifies mileage on every vehicle.

Warning Signs

Physical Signs of Odometer Tampering

Even when the dashboard reads a clean low number, the rest of the car often tells a different story.

🪑

Heavy Seat Wear

Driver's seat bolsters typically show meaningful wear after 100,000 km, especially leather seats which crack and lose shape. A vehicle showing only 40,000 km on the odometer but with significantly worn driver-side upholstery is a strong signal that the mileage may not reflect actual use.

🎮

Worn Steering Wheel and Pedals

Shiny spots on the steering wheel grip, peeling material on the steering column shift selector, and polished rubber pedals are telltale signs of heavy use. Compare these wear patterns against the odometer reading and the year of the vehicle for a quick sanity check.

🔘

Faded or Replaced Controls

High-touch controls — radio knobs, climate control buttons, and the start button — wear visibly with use. Buttons missing labels or showing significant fade in a supposedly low-mileage car often indicate either heavy use or a recent dashboard replacement that may have come along with a fake odometer.

Tire and Brake Condition

Tires last roughly 60,000 to 80,000 km and brake pads typically need replacement around 60,000 to 100,000 km depending on driving style. A car with original-looking tires showing significant wear or freshly-replaced brake components at low mileage warrants closer scrutiny of the entire history.

🔍

Dashboard Scratches and Marks

On vehicles with mechanical odometers, look for tiny scratches around the instrument cluster screws or fingerprints on the inside of the gauge glass. On digital clusters, mismatched fonts or pixels on the mileage digits can indicate aftermarket tampering tools were used.

Engine Bay Condition

Heavily worn engine components, oxidized engine bay metal, and discoloured wiring tell the story of an older vehicle even if the odometer says otherwise. Open the hood and compare what you see against similar-year examples online for an honest baseline.

Verifying Mileage with Records

Beyond physical inspection, several record sources can confirm whether the mileage is consistent with the vehicle's history.

CarFax Canada Reports

A CarFax Canada or similar vehicle history report tracks mileage readings recorded at oil changes, registrations, ICBC events, and inspections. A clean rising mileage curve is normal — a sudden drop or flat line is a major red flag and worth investigating directly with the seller before buying.

Service Records

Dealer and independent shop invoices typically list the vehicle's mileage at the time of service. Compare these records to the current odometer — the mileage should always be higher today than at past service visits. Discrepancies in either direction need explanation.

ICBC Decoded Reports

ICBC records can confirm previous mileage readings reported at registration, transfer, or claim events. Ask the seller for the ICBC vehicle damage report or pull a CarFax Canada that includes ICBC data. These records often catch tampering that physical inspection alone might miss.

OBD2 Data Reads

Many modern vehicles store mileage data in multiple modules — not just the odometer cluster. A scan tool can read these other modules, and a significant discrepancy between them strongly suggests tampering. Independent mechanics can perform this check during a pre-purchase inspection.
